Small Employers That Have Employees on Paid Family Leave Now - Apply for CA Grant

California small employers can apply for California Paid Family Leave (PFL) grants, with funding of up to $2,000 per employee. The grants help employers offset costs associated with employees taking Paid Family Leave, including cross-training current staff and hiring and training new or temporary employees.

Business Size and PFL Participation: Small businesses in California who have 1-100 employees and have at least one employee who used California's Paid Family Leave program (PFL) on or after June 30, 2026.

To qualify, businesses also must be registered to do business in the state, be in active status with the Secretary of State’s office, and have an active California employer account number.

Employers using a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) for payroll are ineligible as they must have their own active California Employer Account Number (CEAN).

Businesses include nonprofit employers.

Permitted Use: Payments are made to the employer to help cover costs related to:

  •  Training or cross-training existing staff to cover the employee’s responsibilities

  • Hiring and training temporary or additional staff

  • Marketing, recruitment, and other reasonably foreseeable training costs.

The grant period is June 30, 2026, through May 31, 2028, or until funds are exhausted.
