2019 Standard Mileage Rates

The 2019 standard mileage rates for the use of an automobile is:

  • 58 cents per mile for business miles driven (54.5 cents for 2018)

  • 20 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes (18 cents for 2018)

  • 14 cents per mile driven in volunteer service of charitable organizations

Taxpayers may use these rates, instead of their actual expenses, to calculate their deductions for business, medical or charitable use of their own vehicles.

Employers are not required to use IRS standard mileage rates for reimbursement. If employers choose to reimburse at a higher rate, the excess is taxable compensation to the employee subject to employer and employee payroll taxes.

The charitable mileage rate is not indexed for inflation and thus remains at 14 cents every year.
