Travel Expenses of Armed Forces Reservists
Thank you for the men and women serving in our armed forces.
Here is a tax benefit for reservists.
Unreimbursed travel expenses (i.e., transportation, meals, and lodging) of a reserve component of the Armed Forces are deductible even though unreimbursed business expense are no longer deductible for the average taxpayer.
Travel must take the Reservist more than 100 miles away from your tax home and require an overnight stay. The deduction is limited and may not exceed the general federal government per diem rate applicable to that locale.
You are a member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces if you are in: The Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard Reserve; The Army National Guard of the United States; The Air National Guard of the United States; or The Ready Reserve Corps of the Public Health Service.
